The 10km open water swimming final has just come to its end. The US athlete Jordan Wilimovsky became the new world champion in this distance, leaving his nearest rivals more than 12 seconds behind.

The American swimmer was followed across the finish line by Ferry Weertman of the Netherlands and Spyridon Gianniotis of Greece. The sports experts considered the latter a favourite before the start, but the two-time world champion had to settle for the third place. Though, there was something to celebrate for all the top ten finishers because they qualified as individuals for the Rio Olympic Games in this discipline. It means that, apart from the quota allocated to national federations, absolutely any participant, regardless of his nationality, could earn a qualifying spot.

What surprised sports experts the most is that Tunisia’s Ous Mellouli, the London 2012 gold medallist, hasn’t even made it into the top ten athletes for the 2016 Olympic Games. Though according to his own words, his main task here in Kazan was to get a qualifying spot for Rio 2016.
