South African open water swimmer Chad Ho became a world champion in the men’s 5km event. His result was 55:17.6. However, according to the scoreboard Rob Muffels (GER) finished at the same time. The gold medallist of this event was eventually determined with the help of a photo finish.

It was not that easy to define visually who was the winner of the 5km open water swim event. Rob Muffels and Chad Ho hit the touchpad almost simultaneously. Moreover, it was the German swimmer who has been leading the race since the very beginning. In the end, only after a thorough examination of the photo finish the judges were able to name the real winner.

A fierce fight unfolded for the bronze medal as well. The photo finish was used again to select the race winner. According to the camera, an Italian swimmer, Matteo Furlan, slapped the touchpad a bit earlier than Russia’s Evgenii Drattcev.

During the whole heat, another Russian swimmer, Sergey Bolshakov, was leading the pack. Even though the native of Izhevsk had a pretty good shot for the victory in the beginning of the race, unfortunately at the end he couldn’t even make it to the top 10 athletes.
